SING 2006

I wish I could SING! I went with a friend to SING last Friday night and wished we had something like this at MSU. (We somewhat did but it was outside and called Derby Days.) :) For those of you non-Baylor folks...I'll explain...it's a HUGE production (the nations biggest amateur show--really). Almost every sorority and fraternity participate and it's a year long preparation! They have to make this (again) HUGE backdrop, that you can see in the background so that none of the stage is showing. Then they are responsible for a 7 min. routine of dancing and SINGING. Some groups take it very seriously and some not so much. Many of my cheerleaders and dancers are in the acts too....which is really crazy considering...basketball season is still going on and they have to do both. They practice more for SING than we do for practices. I guess with that many people they have to make it perfect. They each have a theme and there are MANY rules...like you can't pick a theme that has been used in the last 3-5 years (?) Which is difficult when you think about it because there are usually 15-20 acts every year. All of your songs, of course, have to correlate with your theme. Here is an act that many of my girls were in, SAE's Jock Jams, they did stunts, dancing, etc. Too bad the boys weren't as serious as they were. It a HUGE bragging rights thing really and they spend alot of money on it....$10,000 ish...as you MSU KD girls know all about bragging rights right? (7 yrs in a row) :) They have 5 shows during February (3 in one week and 2 the next weekend). Many of my students have asked if the "Spirit Squads" could do a SING act since we already have a leg up with talent (dance, tumbling, etc) but I just can't imagine the schedule we'd have with basketball games twice a week, then practices, workouts, and then Sing prep....ahhhh....makes me crazy just thinking about it. It has been done before though...the Yell Leaders did it awhile back and should have one but were disqualified due to an ineligible member. But anyway....the Top 7 go to PIGSKIN....(again for you non-Baylor folks) it's a mini-version of SING that is put on during our HUGE HOMECOMING weekend for all of the alumni to come back and watch. (Again) with being involved in Bonfire routine and the game...not sure if we made it to Pigskin if we would have time to breathe that week much less SING and CHEER! It really is a wonderful tradition at Baylor...and a staple of the university.
